The English poet, playwright and novelist John Masefield was born in 1878 in Ledbury. After running away to sea early (when he was thirteen) he settled in London from 1897 and devoted himself to writing. Later he moved to Oxford which was where he lived when most of the following collection was produced. Masefield became Poet Laureate in 1930 and was awarded the Order of Merit in 1935. Henry Higginson, fox hunter and sportsman, author of several books, including Foxhunting, Theory and Practice, and the autobiographical Try Back, son of Henry Lee Higginson, Boston banker and philanthropist; entered Harvard in 1894. Higginson spent the winter of 1899-1900 in a log cabin at Stanton Lake, Montana (Flathead County) for the purpose of collecting natural history specimens for a museum. Sir George Henschel was a German-English composer, conductor, and baritone. He was the first conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, in addition to many appointments in England. His diverse compositions and arrangements showed influences of Brahms and Wagner. He was also professor of singing at the Royal College of Music.
